    Tax software

Can anyone recommend a good software program that would be geared toward someone doing less than 100 returns?  I’ve been licensed for about 2 years and currently work in industry rather than public accounting, but I am looking into doing some tax returns on the side.

    Re: Tax software

Given the complexity of today's practice environment and the worries about Circular 230, etc., doing tax returns on a moonlight basis can be a little dangerous.  If you are game, I have heard of small practitioners using some version of TurboTax.  Go to Intuit's web site and see what they have in terms of semi-professional type products.  Also, look back in this year's archived Journals of Accountancy.  Sometime in mid year they always do a comparison of various features.  Go to AICPA.org.  I have encountered people who join up 3 or 4 practitioners and share a software purchase.

I have used ProSeries in the past and it is a great program for a small firm or sole practitioner.  There is the option of paying per return ($200 initial fee + $30 per 1040 and each state return).  Check out proseries.com for more info on all the other package options.
